I can't speak to Majority Leader Harry Reid's worth or wealth, but I am confused as to why my father is mentioned in Lyle Rescott's recent letter complaining about rich socialism backers ("A narrow view of money and politics," May 29).

Saul Alinsky's yearly salary at the time of his death was $25,000. Hardly a princely sum. He owned no stocks, his life insurance policy was the totality of his estate. He owned an 8-year-old Chevy and we lived in a rented apartment. I guess the mention of his name is just included as a "dog whistle" for those who need a boogie man to convince them of evil.

With an interest and experience in organizing, a copy of Rules for Radicals right in front of me, and currently working as editor of a local newspaper in northern North Carolina, I wonder if there’s a way to encourage someone or ones to attend a potential upcoming dedication of a historical marker at a church in Henderson that was once part of a network led in part by Ben Chavis of Oxford.

It’s possible also to encourage and expect the attendance of Timothy Tyson from Duke and author you’re likely aware of Blood Done Sign My Name, along with the Rev. William Barber.

The plan is to host a large gathering of progressive religious and municipal leaders and residents from across the region for the dedication, who I think would love to witness and benefit from a lecture or panel discussion on organizing, empowering people to properly advocate for change and improve communities in Vance County.

Please let me know what you think.
